Why do refrigerator lights need to be waterproof?

Ultra Waterproof

Under freezing conditions, the defect rate of LED lights is more than five times that under refrigeration conditions.

Why is that?

A refrigerator has two functional zones: freezing and refrigeration. In these different zones of the refrigerator, the working environments faced by LED lighting fixtures vary significantly, resulting in a marked difference in their defect rates.

When the refrigerator is not in operation at night, the temperature in the freezing zone rapidly drops below -18℃. At such low temperatures, ice easily forms inside the refrigerator, and condensation occurs around the lighting fixtures due to temperature differences. When business resumes the next day and the freezing compartment door is opened, the relatively high external temperature contrasts sharply with the low internal temperature, causing the ice inside the compartment to melt into water. Some of this melted water may directly flow into the lighting fixtures; at the same time, condensed water suspended in the air can also easily infiltrate the fixtures.

If the waterproof design of the lighting fixtures is flawed and fails to effectively prevent water ingress, the water that enters the fixtures can cause severe damage to the electronic components. Once these components get damp, their performance will decline sharply, and they may even stop working.

When the refrigerator is not in operation at night, the temperature in the freezing zone drops below -18℃, leading to ice formation inside the refrigerator and condensation around the lighting fixtures. The next day, when business starts and the outside temperature is high while the inside is low, opening the freezer compartment door causes the ice to melt into water. This water can enter the lighting fixtures, or condensed water in the air can infiltrate them. If the fixtures have poor waterproofing, the internal electronic components can be easily damaged, rendering the fixtures inoperative. In addition, the structure of the lighting fixtures also affects their lifespan.

Furthermore, the structural design of the lighting fixtures also has a significant impact on their service life under freezing conditions. Unreasonable structural designs may be unable to withstand the frequent temperature changes and humidity fluctuations in the freezing environment, further increasing the risk of fixture failures.

Why Optical Lenses Matter in Refrigerated Display Lighting — And Why Standard T8/T5 Tubes Fall Short

Lighting inside refrigerated display cases is far more complex than general room illumination. Supermarkets and convenience stores need lighting that not only makes food look fresh and appealing but also performs reliably in cold, humid environments. Unlike bare LED tubes that emit light in all directions, optical lenses precisely control the beam angle, directing light toward the merchandise rather than wasting it on the back panel or into the customer’s eyes.
